It’s pretty sad watching SEOs battle the pros (Search Engine Journal) and cons (Learning SEO Basics) of using SEO to combat complaint sites that can rank highly and spread negative information/experiences about a product, company, or brand.
Why is it sad? Because it’s so much more effective to add well written, well-thought out responses to complaints and offer solutions and follow up THAT YOU ACTUALLY DO PERFORM AND DOCUMENT.
Dell had that nightmare trying to bully people into removing pictures of flaming laptops…other companies’ fun and contrite response letters have gone viral and done wonders to repair damage to the brand. Your choice in 2008?…
My work life straddles design and marketing, and corporate vs. small-business approaches to each. And I’m seeing a lot of variation in how people understand and advocate for SEO strategies.
I see larger businesses with a team of marketing specialists are leaning past plain-old keyword optimization. I personally suspect that they were led in this direction by their lust for Flash and dynamic page technologies that cloak content and disorient spiders. And now that bots can better read Flash, along comes Silverlight; the jury is out on the future of rich-media page readability.
So, to compensate for having hard-to-search pages, and relying…

A lot of human energy is spent trying to figure out what Google is doing at any given time, so as to be in synch with SEO efforts. I don’t think you’ll ever be able to achieve true insight into the operations over there until you acquaint yourself with the cuisine. Sure, the most recent photo is from June 2007, but this year-and-a-half’s record of Google cafe dishes (free to employees) gets you on the vibe.
The blog attracted 339,806 views, and many comments including a few from some very wet blankets:
All I can think is that, with the time associated…
With new evidence from Online Publishers’ Association showing branded environments are much more effective venues for online advertising than directories and portals, many directories come more into focus as SEO-only spends. How do you measure their effectiveness? What role do they play in your advertising or the advertising you recommend to clients? Has this changed in the last year or so? A lively discussion would be fun!

Without comments, blogs aren’t conversations, aren’t fulfilling their mission. They’re de-facto old-school articles being published. That works for some of the big guys who turned off comments because they weren’t enriching the dialogue (Calacanis, please do read this). In fact, when bloggers turn off comments for thoughtful reasons, it shows how much they respect and value the role of comments and don’t want their sites to be places where comments detract or are otherwise counterproductive.
But for the rest of the blogosphere, comments are a reflection of the blog’s ability to engage readers. And many bloggers love a lively debate with people…
A new-to-me site, with a post that has engendered a lot of heartfelt emotional responses surrounding Social Media marketing. The brave new world of marketing is built on human interactions and demands humane activity.
I’m currently walking on air after a couple of blog posts and comments I’ve written for a couple of surveillance video (CCTV) industry blogs led to a wonderful conversation with a very knowledgeable independent industry analyst who took the time to call and learn more about a product I’m promoting — and to give me his candid perspective. He gave much more than he took, and I…
Sometimes I wish my life had a site map. Imagine how easy it would be to explain your history and experiences to other people. Unlike a resume, people could learn everything and anything without restriction and it would all be organized and categorized neatly in one place. Since life is not an Orbits commercial where we have floating icons to choose from, it seems we are out of luck… but more importantly, what about your site?
When it comes to development, Meta data, content, titles and links are very important, but a lot of designers seem to forget about the site…
I really love Gawker. Their content is always quality over quantity, and when you try to read somewhat widely, that counts for a lot. Anyway, loved their Top 15 Most Useless Internet Euphemisms, especially:
Stealth marketing: Hoax. “Viral campaigns” like the dubious ad for headsets that showed phones popping popcorn (a scientific impossibility) are just fraudulent hoaxes. Putting them on YouTube doesn’t change that.

It’s great to be part of Talent Zoo’s SEO Shootout as it launches. I anticipate I will learn more than I am able to contribute by a factor of, well, let’s say 100 to be safe. I’m not an SEO specialist but, rather, a marketing professional who has come to understand that without SEO you can waste a lot of money, time, and miss boatloads of opportunities.
One of the things I am thinking about right now is how SEO is not only about being found organically and ranked well by search engines. It’s also about the inherent business value of the…
